28 Drawings later is a drawing challenge and social networking project created by Visual Artist Victoria Evans. My advice is:
Your degree mark is unimportant.
Try not to spend too much money on your art (unless you're rich)
Put the hours in and the art will get made.
Enjoy yourself.
You don't have to be an artist when you leave art school if you don't want to, but if you do want to then it is entirely possible: All you have to do is keep making art.

Happy New Year to you all!
I hope you are all ready for another year in independent publishing!

In November I was lucky enough to attend the first ever Berlin Zine Fest. I was amazed by how well it was organised. It was a full weekend event. The opening hours were: Sat 10am until 12pm!! and Sunday 10am - 6pm.

There were loads of great free workshops, talks and zine readings. As well as a spoken word night and gig!
I want the Dublin Zine Fair to grow this year, have it a full weekend long and have workshops and events at it.
I would love to have a zine made over the weekend, the "Dublin Zine Fair Zine 2012", anyone can submit a page to it. They do this at the London Zine Symposium and they did one in Berlin too. It's a really brilliant souvenir from the event.

So it got me thinking, if I want it to grow I'm not going to be able to do it all alone. So I'm writing to you guys to see if any of you are interested in joining the Dublin Zine Fair team, to help organise and promote the fair, and mostly to help with things on the weekend and to make sure workshops and events run smoothly.

I'm writing now to give you loads of notice, and time to think about it.
I will call the first meeting for the event in April.

The Monomyth @ Seven

I have been very busy in London town i have just finished working with Patrick Collier on The Monomyth with Transition Collective base in London. If your in London its well worth a look at Seven at Brixton, 7 Market Row, SW9 8LB London.

We both share a fascination with modern and classical mythologies. This collaborative installation explores the hero myth. Universal motifs of adventure and transformation are employed in a multi-faceted visual homage to Campbell's concept of the 'monomyth', which has served as a cultural framework for countless contemporary narratives.

The intricately laser cut imagery of the sculptural rings are inspired by the Book of Revelations and the opening of the Seven Seals, bringing forth the Horsemen of Conquest, War, Famine, Death before the final end of the world.

Screen printed illustrations evoke the narrative of the hero's adventure, depicting the archetypal characters and their gifts, knowledge and tests to be encountered along the way: the wise old man, the goddess, the trickster, herald and villain. Above looms the belly of the whale - an unknown void that threatens to swallow the hero but ultimately represents a sphere of rebirth.

When I met Denise at the Tinderbox Picture Show that the founder member Clare curated back in 2010, I knew I had met a woman whom I would like to know better. (alongside my dote Elida, Clare, Damien ,and all the others on that lovely evening.).........but I never met her again as she lives too far away :(

Her work is so rich, it is so beautifully constructed.
This new piece made me cry this morning.......art is a place for us to make a difference.

Hello everyone.. here are a couple of pieces I've been working on.. the first is one for my sister here in London, that one is finished, and the second one is for another sister, its from a photo she took in Palestine, and its a surprise for her birthday, so I'm hoping she likes it!! I'm finding it hard to get the colour of the sheep right, they seem to be coming out a bit bright yellow but I want it to be duller..so going to take a bit of time to get it right..

My apologies for zero response in the last six months as I've been extremely busy.
I really like the idea of showing some work in progress, so here I am.
I began a mentoring program in June with Ruth Le Gear, The Firestation artists studios and ADI in Dublin.

This was an amazing opportunity to access and condense my practice. We've decided to put a book together on my work and show the creative, visual process of the mentoring program which will be published by December.
Here is a little preview, it's a photo from one of our meetings at The Science Gallery in Dublin, during the exhibition 'The Beauty of Chemistry'.

Breaking Bad

I've been very lazy of late both doing new stuff and posting on here, so here's a drawing I did in Photoshop of Walt from Breaking Bad. I added the watercolour splashes to hint at the violence in the show and I also like the texture in the blue splash as it looks a bit like a chemical reaction. And of course he cooks blue crystals!

He has such a great face for drawing, great lines and full of character.

A dead space under stone arches was opened up and provided a great venue for the day, although it was quite cold! The little Tinderbox table went down well with the public and added a micro dimension to the all the work you do. I have been attending some life drawing sessions here in Paris. I'm trying to develop my drawing technique by first getting the basics covered. I intend to use my sketches in more developed compositions in future, and I'm exploring the possibilities of lithography. (any advice greatly appreciated).

Hello, I started making paper cuts again, I found a lovely book of traditional paper cuts and as I love folk art and birds, I gave this polish rooster a try and I don't think it will stop there, I've been designing paper cuts in my head all night and all day, still tipping away at other projects but everything is in bits and pieces, I'm working on some Halloween doll decorations at the weekends and now my mam has made me a master of the sewing machine I should have them finished at the weekend so will post them soonio I hope, Love to the tinderboxers x

Hi everyone! My name is Richael and I joined Tinderbox a little while back but never had anything to share, until now!
As you all know, Tinderbox had a space at the Dublin Zine 3 weekends ago, and it was a wonderful success. I was also there, along with Jane, another Tinderbox member and Elida. As a result of handing out my own business cards over the weekend, I will now have a stall at the up and coming Ranelagh Fest Craft Fair this weekend, the 17th and 18th of September.
So, I just thought I would share the news incase anyone is interested in getting a stall, or just want to pop down for a wee peep at what is going on in the world of craft. For anyone who was at the zine fair, I'm making a lot of new work for the craft fair, so just because you saw me, don't think that's all I have up my sleeve !
The craft fair is being held in the Ranelagh Multi-Denominational School, located on the Ranelagh Road each day from 11-5. It's free in and you can find out further information from the facebook page Creative Collective Ireland.

Edward was a smart boy. As the third child of six he knew how to keep his head down and stay out of the spotlight. He did his homework without incident and even kept his youngest brother out from underfoot. Yes, Edward was a clever boy. He knew how not to get caught in the act of whatever neighborhood scheme he had arranged for the gang. This talent he had inherited from his father.

Edward was tall for his age, with light brown hair. Nerdy glasses slid down his unpresuming nose. There wasn’t much to do in his small town and so he passed the summer in the same way boys have always done in small towns everywhere. He wrestled with his brothers. He came up with elaborate plans designed to make his sisters cry. He caught insects and removed their wings. He set as many things as possible on fire. And he waited for the school year to begin.

You can rest assured that the whole tinderbox collectives best interests were well looked after by the stall holders (see above photo) who stayed all day from 12-5pm !!

Samuel Carroll Maiques made the most money , in fact he couldnt keep up with the sales of his talented mothers exclusive zine tea matters.....it was a sell out .

As I mentioned , I had my own little space beside the mothership and I have to say it was definately worth it .....there is a very good chance that the brilliant anto dillon of loserdom zine+ a good few others will organize the independants day shindig again for this november...............

also its great to see the new header and the call for gods and monsters...I have such a strong feeling about this work , the curators of the project miss emma rowe and miss elida maiques will be at the tinderbox stall on saturday ,if you want to jam the theme or just leave some submissions etc.......

ALSO guys ....this is a little delicate , but , why oh why is there no more support from the 130 ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY members of tinderbox for the upcoming tinderbox stall ??, this saturday in the ranelagh arts centre.....12-5pm

collaboration , it needs collaborants , not just cormorants.

Work can be mailed , emailed , discussed here on the blog .

As it is , we will be fine, just about, (the stall will show our existing work + the remaining 5 heartstrings song drawings zines) that I made with elida last year in an edition of 20.

I'm Yvonne, love pen and ink, but also work in vector. The above illustration is unpublished. I was exploring textures and tones in black and white. I had just come back from a holiday in Bali, where they are chess mad so perhaps was inspired by this. I work in old style dip pen and indian ink as much as possible, its much more tactile than the computer. I produce prints and greeting cards using both techniques. I love the Tinderbox blog and ethos, its refreshing and inspiring and I'm delighted to be on board.

Half-Life

Once upon a time, a young man asked his King for a spoonful of good earth on the first square of the King’s chess board, and two spoonfuls on the second, and double again on the third, and so on until the chessboard was completed. The King laughed at this foolishness, but eventually agreed. He ordered that it be so. After a day, his fearful overseer returned, and reported that it could not be done, and the King realised he had been fooled. He called the young man back into his presence, and apologised for his arrogance, while requesting that the young man stay in the palace, as his advisor. Their wisdom became famous, far and near, and it was with great sadness, after many years, his subjects learned that the King had passed away. In his place, his young son, was now to reign.

Some time later, the young King’s advisors were called together, so they could help decide on a great opportunity, that was being offered the Kingdom. They were to become the storehouse of the world’s nuclear waste, and would grow wealthy from the proceeds. The people would never be short of work, and never be hungry again.

The advisors told the young King that it was too dangerous, because this waste had a half life of 24,400 years or 12,000 human generations. As it decayed, uranium-235 would be generated. This had a half-life of 710,000 years. And so the young king became angry, because he thought he knew the rule of halves, and that all these advisors were trying to make him look stupid.

Finally, he dismissed them all, and had a great hole dug, where he put all the nuclear waste he could find. Then, he and his people waited for it to turn to gold. It never did, and all the people died, and the land also, in dying, was forever cursed.

A Song for William:

A message to my Great Grandson

Once upon a time in the very place where you now leave your footprints was a world with green trees and blue skies. Fresh water was everywhere and the world was safe haven. I barely knew this world for my arrival on this planet took place after man had discovered the atom bomb, the petrol driven car and nuclear energy.

Oh William, my distanced child I am afraid I made things worse. I was arrogant, I did not care for the earth beyond my time, I was too involved in the present, and at most only considered the near future. I did not truly believe the earth was dying. How could anyone have understood that, it would be like your mother dying while you grew in her womb, it does happen William but people do not dare to believe it.

We were too frightened to spend our money, the world was in economic crises, we were too frightened to plan for a future that in a second could be taken away by the callous acts of a terrorist. Oh William, we were too selfish to think of your tomorrow.

I hope for you, dear William that all the damage I have inflicted upon the earth, the disregard I had for nature that I left you something. Something so valuable that you alone can lift your heart, that you alone can achieve salvation. Oh William, dear William do you hear my song? My song of hope for a better world that belongs to you?

Take care of the earth, the life left within it, it is your turn now dear William to right the wrongs, to look to the future. Oh William, dear William dear you hear my song, my song of hope for a better world that belongs to you?

Hey, nice weather for a trip to the botanical gardens....there's an exhibition there at the moment if you haven't already heard, its called "branching out" by the Irish Patchwork society. It's running until the 2nd of August. More info here http://www.irishpatchwork.ie/. I went along yesterday and took some pictures of what you can expect. Part of the exhibition was their display of fabric based postcard submissions from all over the world. They received many beautiful and clever entries! Worth a look!

Hi all, this is my first post, I've been following some of your work and enjoying the posts for awhile now.I'd Just like to share some of my latest work, work that I'm really enjoying. I had to do 3 black and white pages of a comic for college during the year and we were told to explore a style of our own and I found I really enjoyed fine liner and stipple, particularly when illustrating animals with such unique form. These Lapwings are amazing looking birds that really inspired me, they are on tracing paper as I love the delicate effect it gives when inked on with fine liner.

I use alot of different media and styles, I find I just love to explore and as I begin to work I get lost in it like when you're writing a letter to someone you're very close to and you get caught up in sharing all your news with them, every detail your scribbling away in anticipation of the understanding and joy they'll have when they read it and reply!
I'm looking forward to more posts, and sharing work and inspiration together!

Cy Twombly - RIP

Famed American painter Cy Twombly, who first found the limelight with his calligraphic paintings in the late 1950s, has died in Rome aged 83.

The US artist was widely known for abstract works that used oil paint, pencil and crayon to create repetitive lines and scribbles on canvas.

‘It Does Not Illustrate’

In the only written statement Mr. Twombly ever made about his work, a short essay in an Italian art journal in 1957, he tried to make clear that his intentions were not subversive but elementally human. Each line he made, he said, was “the actual experience” of making the line, adding: “It does not illustrate. It is the sensation of its own realization.” Years later, he described this more plainly. “It’s more like I’m having an experience than making a picture,” he said. The process stood in stark contrast to the detached, effete image that often clung to Mr. Twombly. After completing a work, in a kind of ecstatic state, it was as if the painting existed but he himself barely did anymore: “I usually have to go to bed for a couple of days,” he said.

Hi guys. Here are somo possibles for the new zine, wanted your opinion. I found it a bit difficult to come up with something that would be related to the subject by taking a photograph but I hope I achieved it a bit with these. The third photo 'Upside down world' is an old one and my other version of it that I posted here before is in black and white. I've tried adding colour to it to give it a kind nuclear doom type of feel but I've just started using Photoshop Elements, don't know much about how to use it and it could probably be improved. What do you think? The other three photos I took during a walk into town last week and I had the Gods and Monsters theme in mind. The first one might be a bit silly actually. I was in a Butlers cafe having my latte and I spotted this stain on a light on the floor that looked like a kind of cutish monster (at least to me) so I took a photo of it. I got some funny looks, ha, ha, people must have thought I was a bit potty (and they wouldn't be far off...) The second one is manhole cover with the symbols that indicate that's been sealed so that nobody can get out of it from below. I've noticed a lot of these around the time of Obama and the Queen's visit and they fascinate me. I had a better photo than this but it was portrait format so I took this one and brought up the colours to make it more interesting (hopefully) for the zine. The 'tortured wood' one I took in the Iveagh gardens. There's some dead wood there with great shapes. I changed the colours to bring out some red and I think it looks pretty shocking!
Well, give me your opinions. May be two or three could be selected for the zine, although I could still try to do something better... Would each image take up a page with some text underneath, or would the writers you were talking about write a text about it on the page next to the image?
About the funding, thanks for that sheet Elida! I've printed it out and will try to do something with it. I was actually thinking of offering to take portraits of my friends in exchange for whatever money they want to give towards it. I've just emailed Blackrock Market and hopefully I'll get a spot on Saturday the 16th of July. I could bring some of the old zines there. And finally, remember I have a little cash from the last market available...

Hi Tinderboxers

1.Elida and myself had a meeting yesterday about the quotes we got from printers. 500euro seems to be the benchmark for a 32 page, double sided colour printed booklet for 100 copies, thats 5 euro a book. Paper stock, as we are printing digitally seems to be a stumbling block but we have sourced printers that can give us something that is not on bloody god awful glossy stock. So each page could work out quite costly for a person, 500 divided by 32 is 15.65. The number of pages maybe come in under that but realistically it will be around that amount. This is just printing cost. We wanted you guys to be aware of want costs we are encountering.

2. So costs of course led to.....

Funding. We looked at a web site called Fund-it, which has a very interesting premise, you set a taggert amount and pitch your idea for your art project in a video on line to get funds. It sounds perfect but when I went through the red tape it just sounded a bit of a quagmire. For one thing they asked for credit card details and will debit said credit card of the funds for 22 days, IF, you reach your target, at which point they refund you. So forget that, we can have our own Fund It type project. The premise of a pitch is a good one, so pitch it too your friends, family and patrons. A Tinderbox event or mini events will be needed. Maybe Mini events can help in your own funding our help the group. Myself and Elida made a list yesterday of things, within reason and the law you can do. Elida will post on this. Please!!! throw out ideas for funding. Ok thats enough for now.

Call for Zines/Artist Books and Independent Publications

On Saturday 27 August the Ranelagh Arts Centre is hosting a zine/independent publishing fair. There will be over 20 stalls full of artist books, zines, comics, and D.I.Y. /independent publications. The event will be accompanied by live music provided by band Gypsy Rebel Rabble and will be followed by a screening of a zine documentary with popcorn.

A full table is 20 euro, half a table is 10 euro. Act fast as the stalls are booking out quickly. If you would like to have a stall at the event, please contact Sarah Bracken at sarahranelagharts@gmail.com.

Tinderbox Zine 6 !!!!!!!!

Hi all

So myself (Emma R) and the wonderful Elida have been thinking of producing a Zine as both of us did not fancy going it alone we joined forces. We have been batting ideas back and forth on what we would like it to be. We both had the mind set that it would be produced to a specific brief; most zines till now have been an accompaniment to exhibitions. This zine of course will accompany future exhibitions but could also be sold in say places like the Winding Stair. Secondly we would invest more in its production and finish.

What we wish to do is a landscape sized, A5 format, colour printed and a cloth-covered spine. In order to achieve a finish of a high standard we would ask that those that wish to submit would pay for the pages they use. For instance I wish to use four pages and would be quite willing to contribute to what I use in order to get a high quality finish. Please check these links out as to what we aim for. Nobrow was something I looked and Elida at Cabanon Press. So you can see we both are on the same zine page (insert groan here).

We are thinking about other forms of money raising/funding, with the aim that this will not be the only zine created. But a group contribution is what we are looking for, for this zine.

Ok! So, the evolution of theme. Elida and myself were both affected by a documentary called Into Eternity. (It’s about what to do with nuclear waste that has to be hidden for 100,000 years and thus the implications of this, it’s quite fascinating because language as we know it now may not be enough to warn future generations. 100,000 years is a looonnnggg time). GODS AND MONSTERS

Subtitle: Monsters of tomorrow

Gods and Monsters, I know it’s a movie title but it has a ring to it. We can change it around. I won’t go too in-dept into the themes myself and Elida talked about as regards our own work because I don’t want to limit your interpretations of what the title can mean to you guys. Maybe you see duality in this title, I was thinking we maybe need new fairy tales as warnings for new monsters, Elida was concerned with waste and its longevity. We hope that many things can be woven by your minds into this title. The links I hope will be of help. Leave your thoughts and intentions of interest here and Elida and myself will get building.

We were also thinking of inviting the fabulous writers of Fighting Words to collaborate with us once again, writing texts around the Gods and Monsters/Monsters of Tomorrow theme, that we could illustrate.

Hi Y'all

been kinda busy with dodging the horendous rain and wind here in Mayo and zoning in on all things cozy and interior .

It was so horrid , I gave my market stall a miss yesterday (anyone lend me a tenner ?)

I have just made an installation in the museum of country life , its temporary ,responding to our feelings around home and involved over 20 artists , mostly working outside, lucky me escaped the elements and was to be found importantly placing primroses around a dolls house inside........you know , all in a days work !!

BUT the bit I really enjoyed making was the zine.

I bought a mini zine from nathalia of stitchy press when I was at the independants day fair last year with our very own tinderbox heartstrings collection song drawings extravaganza.

I put it away and then was reminded of this super handy and so do-able format when I spied it on miss maiques totally smashing blog.

As you can see it is a mere A4 page ,folded in a certain way ,which I cut and pasted manually my images and then got photocopied to give away to those clever enough to spy the little message within my museum within a museum .

If you are really more than interested there are simply loads more images and info on my very own blog ..ok ?

I have had a few enquiries recently about our skill exchange workshops and I was wondering if any of you talented Tinderboxers would be interested in sharing your skills.

Skill Exchange Workshops

• Life Drawing
• Lino Printing
• Zine Making
• Collage Workshop
• Web Design Basics
• Photography Basics
• Digital Illustration
• Animation
• Proposals and suggestions welcome

The aim of these workshops is to share skills and encourage collaboration. Admission fees should be kept as low as possible and used entirely to cover the costs of materials plus a small fee for the teacher/workshop leader.

What you will need:

• Cheap / free venue
• Lesson plan / project-brief or outline of a project to be completed within the workshop. This should include an introduction to the topic.
• Materials / info in advance for participants to bring the right materials
• Refreshments. This isn't essential, but at previous workshops we supplied some wine and soft drinks at the end of the session. It gives participants a chance to chat about their experience and give feedback.

It can be a very rewarding experience to share your skills with others. If you are interested in volunteering or if one of these workshops appeals to you, please post a comment below or contact me

some of you might remember waaay back, i posted a wee project i was working on called SOUVENIR, lots of you joined in, which is fantastic! but its been a while now so i thought i better update you.

souvenir is an experimental exhibition project using old fashioned mail and futuristic e-mail. you can take part by sending a postal address to:

there are 96 people signed up already, from all over the world, but i have 100 pieces of artwork to post so i need 4 more. i hope to see the project evolve in regular audio visual mixtape with lots of fun spin offs. issue 1 is ready to go, and i can't wait to finnish issue 2

Moate Culture Night

Good news Tinderboxers, I have secured a shared exhibition space for a Tinderbox exhibit as part of Moate Culture Night in about two months time (date to be announced). The event will be listed in the National Culture Night brochure. Darren Doyle of Studio93 is heading the event and has agreed to showcase our work. It's an external space with a fantastic stone archway which will house most of the work.

A table will be set up to accomodate cards, prints, whatever you have. Framed pieces can be hung, (we are looking into this), and if any of you have installation pieces that would survive the Irish weather that would be great too.

I am in Dublin on the 28th-29th May if any of you would like me to pick up stuff, but we can organise to collect the work at a later date. Those of you outside Ireland, email me if you would like to post something over, or we can print here if that is easier.
